A Conditional Access satellite receiver is a type of receiver that is used
for Direct To Home reception. These receivers work like a standard
Free To Air (FTA) receiver for reception of non-scrambled or encrypted TV
and radio channels, but also includes a card reader and authorized software
for authentication of subscription cards. These encryptions include
Irdeto, Viaccess, Nagravision, Conax, Etc...
Can a CA receiver be used a Free To Air (FTA) receiver?
Yes. A CA receiver can be used for reception of both channels that
broadcast Free To Air & can be used to subscribe to a scrambled or encrypted
channel.
